Cultivating More Confident Passengers in Austin

Partnering with Capital Metro, we developed a unified approach for wayfinding and information design to help transit users navigate the system and bring disparate measures together.

Wayfinding has always played a major role in getting passengers to various destinations throughout Austin, but there was not a cohesive information system to help them make an informed decisions.  Any transit system that does not nurture confident users may find itself with a glut of unhappy customers and lower ridership. It was clear that Cap Metro's wayfinding system was in need of overhaul.

A flexible wayfinding system is a compelling tool in negotiating the complexities of modern transport networks.

We put the map at the heart of the system, drawing inspiration from Austin's unique geography. Each element, from route map to directional signage to the system map, are based on the same overarching design principles and work together for a seamless navigation.

Employing A/B prototyping and full-scale models of signage we tested various approaches with transit users, operators, and community stakeholders.

The design measures range for directional signs to informational displays and printed materials.
