One of the biggest issues with many transit maps is that they tend to lack hierarchy of service levels. At the start of the project, we produced a sample map that put greater focus on differentiation between different modes of service.

The map is based on a grid system that controls the placement of individual features in space. Each transit line then manually rendered based on various considerations such as readability and legibility. The final map is a type of hybrid rendering that resembles actual geography yet simplifies many details to create a more user-friendly product.

Final draft of the Downtown detail, which simplifies the dense bus and rail network.

Map legend breaks down the many confusing transit types into more digestible categories.
